Yacu World

Long terms project

rather than limited ones

About the tribes

The ticunas live at the center of the Amazon, bordering three countries (Brazil, Colombia, and Peru). There are split on the Colombian shore of the Amazon and benefit from this fantastic nature they’ve lived in. Up to 20 years ago, the Ticunas were nomads, living in complete autarky. They killed animals for their living (fish, snakes, and eventually monkeys). They had some fields they labored but as well ate the fruits given from the forest. They had their political system and their own education.

With the arrival of the Fark, the government has prohibited nomadism, willing to control where the population was, how big, and their education. Sadly, the Ticunas changed their habits by living a sedentary lifestyle. Plastic suddenly became part of their life. Food was bought at a general store as well as eventually some furniture, medicines and much more. Sadly the Ticunas did not have an ecologic attitude to this new way of living. They weren't taught that plastic and metal would pollute, and the amazone river was not the solution to the problem.

What is Yacu world?

Yacu world is an association created in 2018. Its goal is to show the tribes how good plastic can be, avoiding as much as possible pollution and ideally, deforestation. In other words, together with the local authorities, we have developed a unique waste management program to improve all non organic waste, transforming them into construction material.

Our Challenges in the Amazon

Une tribue

- 6'000 indigenous people lives in 22 villages

- Priorities on health & education

- Local Communities = Forest guardians

- Promotion of local culture and ancestral knowledges

Environmental:

- 500'000 ha of protected areas to conservate

- Create an ecological corridor between two main ecosystems

- Waste management

- Water treatment

- Green energy

The ticunas village.

Economic:

- Create sustainable activities to generate revenues and therefore independency

- Trainings to develop local management skills within a long term period

The waste for conservation program

While crossing the Amazon on a boat, we discovered a place where people live in perfect harmony with Nature. Since then, we understand that it is essential indeed, but also possible to live in balance with Nature, as long as we preserve this extraordinary planet we live on. With the strong belief Life depends on water, we think that, by making-up a movement, we, as people, will be able to preserve the environment, local cultures and traditions. This is how the Yacu World Tribe was born.

Numbers

500 kg

This month we have evacuated more than 500kg of waste.

40%

The Amazon terretory represent 40% of the South American continent.

20%

It is 20% of the world's oxygen and water.

The Amazon

The Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest on our planet. Its territory represents 40% of the South American continent surface which represents 1,5 times the European Union. It also produces 20% of the world's oxygen and water. Indeed, the Amazon river is the world's largest river of our planet, generating more than 200'000 m3 of water per second.

How the process works

Firstly, different types of plastic are collected by the tribes. They need to be washed, sorted, and finally heated and compressed. This process aims to create some tools or even some items to build docks and eventually houses.

Our hopes for the future

This month we have evacuated more than 500kg of waste from indigenous communities, and some 50 kilograms of basic food has been distributed. Our project won’t last more than five years to let the Ticunas be autonomous again. Helping other ecological project around the world will always be in our minds.
